Green Smoothies, Kale Chips and Jelly Beans

Feb 16, 2014

I start each day with a green smoothie; Almond milk, spinach, kale, avocado, Sunwarrior protein powder, banana, ice and whatever superfoods I have recently been conned into buying with a promise to naturally support my body's energy levels and mood.

Lunch is usually a salad with lots of veggies and either beans, tempeh or nuts and seeds.

I snack on kale chips, made at home in my Excalibur dehydrator.

There is no typical dinner, I love to experiment with new recipes but we eat a lot of vegetables, lentils, beans, tempeh and some grains. We eat quinoa, rice, pasta (not as often as Babycat would like), potatoes and omg bread. Yes I eat bread! I probably eat wheat or some other gluten containing product a couple of times a week and to be honest I don't notice any negative side effects.

I drink. Sometimes too much, but not too often.

I sometimes wonder if a different diet would be more optimal for my body. If I cut out bread completely would I never be grumpy again? If I eliminated the evil that is sugar would my six pack appear as if by magic? If I ate grass-fed, organic meat would I suddenly master the human flag?

I am not at all Paleo. I am not 100% vegan. I eat mostly real food. But, I won't explode if I eat an entire bag of valentines jelly beans (did that yesterday) or processed, fake vegan cheese occasionally. There are times I could sleep better, have higher energy or be in a better mood. I have no will power or self control when left alone with a bar of chocolate. But I have no problem gaining muscle or learning new movements. I recover very quickly from workouts.

I fully believe that what we eat has a huge impact on our mood and energy levels but no amount of broccoli or coconut water will make me feel as good as moving. I love starting my day with a freestyle mobility, movement flow on the carpet upstairs. Sometimes it will just be a few minutes but sometimes I can play for an hour. Some days we go to the garage and we work hard, other days we just take it easy and rest. But everyday we move.

Work hard. Eat real food. Move. Rest. Repeat.
